CONGRATULATIONS!
Special congratulations to all Harlan County 4-H’ers who exhibited at the Nebraska State Fair and AK-SAR-BEN. It is an awesome achievement to be able to compete at that level, and we are proud of all of you.
FALL CRAFT WORKSHOPS
Attention crafters, ages 7 to 12! Two craft workshops are being planned. The first workshop will be held on October 24 at the Ag Center in Orleans from 3:15 to 5:45 p.m. The second workshop will be held on October 26 from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. in the courthouse meeting room in Alma. The cost of each workshop is $3.00 and includes two crafts and snacks. Please call the Extension office at 928-2119 to pre-register.
4-H ACHIEVEMENT BANQUET
The annual 4-H Achievement Banquet will be held on November 3 at the Ag Center in Orleans. We hope you will plan to come. The Republican Valley Livestock 4-H Club is in charge of decorations and a great evening is in the plans. Please call the office by October 31 to make reservations.
Be sure to thank the Orleans Civic Club for cooking the meal and the Orleans Chamber for sponsoring it.
THE 4-H FALL BALL
The Harlan County 4-H Council will be sponsoring a Fall Ball for all
4-H’ers and their guests on November 10 at the Ag Center in Orleans. The Dance and Movie Night will start at 7:00 p.m. and end at 10:00 p.m. Dance contests, decorations, and great music will make this an event you won’t want to miss. Admission will be $2.00. Pop can be purchased for $.25 a cup. Refreshments will be served. Mark this on your calendar; it will be great fun!
CATCH A CALF APPLICATION
Youth are encouraged to apply for the 4-H Catch-A-Calf program sponsored by the National Western Stock Show. Individuals catching a calf in January 2007 will show the calf provided to them at the 2008 National Western Stock Show. Applicants must be between the ages of 12 and 18 as of December 31, 2006, to apply and also enrolled in 4-H at the time of application. Successful catchers must have adequate facilities available to house their steer as they are responsible for the care, feeding and handling of their animal.
Applications are due to Ivan Rush, PHREC, 4502 Avenue I, Scottsbluff, NE 69361, by November 21, 2006.
TRAINING OPPORTUNITY FOR 4-H VOLUNTEERS
A Volunteer R&R (Retool & Refuel) will be held at College Park in Grand Island, Nebraska, from 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2006. The training is being conducted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension 4-H Youth Development. The focus of this Volunteer R&R is youth development, healthy lifestyles, and family and consumer sciences. Registration for the educational training is $30 and is due November 17, 2006. A detailed schedule and registration form can be obtained at your local University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension office or your local Extension office.
FARM BUREAU FOOD STAND
Harlan County Farm Bureau Women have provided beverages and snacks for hot and hungry 4-H’ers and others at the fair for many years. They have decided not to do the food stand at the 2007 Harlan County Fair. If you know of an organization or someone who would interested in taking over the ring side food booth, please contact Jerry Bose, fair board president (868- 4181).

*HOMEMAKER CLUB NEWS*
WONDERLAND OF SNOW CHRISTMAS
Sleds, snowflakes, snowmen and all things wintery will be used to decorate at the 2006 Homemaker Club Christmas event. The celebration will be held on November 13 at the Ag Center in Orleans. The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the popular mini mall. A sit-down dinner will be served at 6:30, and a holiday fashion show will follow. Again this year, each Homemaker Club is asked to decorate a table (two, if possible) and is encouraged to use a Wonderland of Snow theme. The cost of the evening is $8.00 and reservations are a must. Please pre-register before November 9. The monies from this event funds the three scholarships that the Homemaker Club Council awards to graduating seniors in the spring, so please support this event.

Your Homemaker Club’s Program of Work and officer list is due in our office by November 1. (Please pick a Cultural Arts Chairman. This person will help set the Cultural Art classes for fair.)
Dues of $ 5.00 per member are due to Marlene Decker by November 1.
Outstanding Homemaker Club sheets are due in the office by December 31.
