Beginning Sewing Workshops
Two beginning sewing workshops
are planned – one on June 13 and one on June 15. A Mini Skirt workshop will be held on June 13 from 9:00-Noon at the Ag Center in Orleans. A capri pants workshop will be on June 15 from 9:00-Noon at the Johnson Center in Alma. The workshops are designed for 4-H seamstresses who have been sewing for less that three years. Cost of each workshop is $5.00, which covers the pattern, fabric and notions. Each class is limited to ten participants. Please call the Extension office to pre-register.
MOTHER-DAUGHTER SEWING WORKSHOP
A sleep pants workshop will be presented on June 29. This mother -daughter sewing class will be held at the Johnson Center in Alma from 5:30 to 9:00. The cost of the workshop is $15.00, which includes patterns, fabric, and notions for two pair of pants, plus pizza and pop. If you are interested, contact the office for more information and a registration form.
SAY CHEESE! FRANKLIN–HARLAN COUNTY 4-H PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
A beginning 4-H photography workshop is planned for June 14 at the Community Building in Wilcox. The workshop is designed for first and second year photographers and will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The hands-on workshop will cover photography basics. Time will be spent taking pictures, so youth will need to bring their own camera and film or can use a digital camera. A follow up workshop is planned for June 21 from 9:00 -11:30 at the Wilcox Community Building were the workshop pictures will be evaluated and mounted for Photography I fair exhibits. Please register at the Harlan County Extension Office in Alma 928-2119. There will be a $3.00 registration fee, payable at the door.
THIS ‘N THAT DAY
This ‘N That Day will be held on June 20 at the Ag Center in Orleans from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Youth will make tye-dye T-shirts, frog houses, and accessories to wear at the “2006 Academy Award Fair”. They will also be doing mosaic tiling and using beads to create fair exhibits. This year the format will be different. Older 4-H’ers may choose to do more difficult projects and work at their own pace. All four-H’ers will leave with finished projects that can be exhibited at the fair. The cost of the day is $8.00, which will cover supplies, snacks and a noon lunch. Pre-register by June 16.
OLD JEANS TO A NEW RUFFLED SKIRT
Please plan to attend the "An Old Jeans to New Skirt" sewing workshop July 6, at the Orleans Ag Center. This sewing workshop, is design for 4-H seamstress with intermediate to advanced sewing skills. The workshop will be given twice once at 9:00 a.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. Mothers and/or grandmothers are invited to also take part in this three hour learning experience. The cost is $5.00 per seamstress. Contact the office for more information and to register.
FOODS WORKSHOP PLANNED
4-H ‘ers, are you interested in learning the magic of cookie baking? If so, attend the two hour cookie baking learnshop which is scheduled for July 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the Ag Center in Orleans. Also, a two hour “Mastering the Commercial Mix” learnshop is scheduled for the same day at 5:30 p.m. at the Ag Center. Parents are invited to attend. Please contact the office for more information. ATTENTION CLOTHING MEMBERS!
I have acquired a large supply of colored serger thread and am starting a thread library. If you are needing colored thread and want to use what I have, you may check out the spools. There is no charge for the thread you use, I just ask that you return the spools when you are finished so someone else can use them.

REMINDER
You must be AQA Certified to show livestock at the Harlan County Fair and before your ID sheets can be sent on for state fair. Contact the office if you have not been certified or have questions about it.
THE 2006 4-H ACADEMY AWARD FAIR
The style revue planning committee has decided on “An Academy Award” theme for this year’s fair. Red carpet runways, Hollywood decorations and lots of glitter and class will be seen at the 2006 pre-fair and fair.

ATTENTION BIKE MEMBERS
Bicycle Rodeo will be July 8 at the Ag Center in Orleans. We hope you are signed up for this really fun project. Bicycle letters have been sent, so if you don’t get a letter, you are not signed up for the bicycle project and you will need to call the office.
PRESENTATIONS/FOOD REVUE - JULY 11
Again this year, the Presentation Contest and Favorite Food Revue will be held at 6:30 in the evening at the Ag Center in Orleans. The evening will begin with presentations which will be followed by the Favorite Food Revue. Presenters need to pre-register for the presentation contest so we can send you the State Fair information. You could be Harlan County’s entry into the Premium Presenter Contest. You do not need to pre-register for the Favorite Food Revue, but we ask that you have your tables set up by 6:00 p.m. becasue we will be advertising that the public can come and see the tables from 6:00 to 7:00. The judging starts at 7:00.
JULY 20 IS A BIG DAY!
July 20 is a big day for all 4-H’ers taking clothing projects or being in the Song/Talent Contest. All clothing and Style Revue entries are judged on July 20 at the Ag Center in Orleans. The Public Style Revue and Song/Talent Contest will be held that evening at the Ag Center in Orleans, beginning at 8:00 p.m. If you are planning to enter the Song/Talent Contest, please call the Extension office by July 14 so we can get you on the program. Those 4-H’ers entering the Song/Talent contest can practice at the Ag Center on July19 and 20. Letters to all clothing members will be sent soon. If you don’t get one, and are in a clothing project, please let us know.
JUST FOR FUN DOG Show
The third annual “Just for Fun Dog Show” will be on Monday evening, July 24, at 6:00 p.m. at the show arena in Orleans. This dog show will be open to any 4-H’er who has a pet dog. Four-H’er and dog will be judged on 4-H’ers knowledge of their pet
and quality of the dog “as a pet”. This is not a dog obedience show. Watch next month’s newsletter for more information.
4-H MEAT GOAT SHOW
Phelps County is hosting a 4-H Invitational Meat Goat Show for the first time this year. The show will be held on Wednesday, July 26. The show will be a one day show with exhibitors coming in that day. The weigh in will be from 11:00 - 11:30 and the show will be at 1:00. They will have showmanship classes and market classes. Please call Leslie Wagner at the Phelps County Extension Office (995-4222) if you have questions.
