2006 FAIR BOOKS ARE HERE!
Please pick one up at your local bank or in our office. The book is set up the way same as last year. Remember, with this new system it is very important that every entry has the entry card filled out completely (especially livestock). Again this year you will need to fill out the Department (which is a letter) Section (which is the Division number in the fair book) and the Class number. It is very important that you fill out all three of these blanks on the exhibitor card or we cannot enter your entry on the computer and it will affect your premium check. This year you can only enter three exhibits per class, unless otherwise stated in the fair book.
FAIR BOOK CORRECTION:
The Swine Show on Friday, July 28, will begin at 8:00 a.m. instead of 10:00 a.m. as stated in the fair book.

This dog show will be open to any 4-H’er who has a pet dog. Four-H’er and dog will be judged on 4-H’ers knowledge of their pet and quality of the dog “as a pet”. This is not a dog obedience show. Four-H’ers will be interview judged and must wear a 4-H T-shirt. Pre-registration is required by Monday, July 17. No dogs will be shown at the small pet show on Wednesday, July 26. Each 4-H’er will receive a ribbon and a doggy prize (treats and toys for your dog). Best of Show will be picked, but no trophy will be given. There will also be awards for dogs that do tricks.
Please remember, as a dog owner you are responsible for your dog’s behavior, so please do not bring your dog if you think it might not behave or you can’t control it.
NOTICE TO POULTRY EXHIBITORS
All exhibitors of poultry must tell the poultry superintendent at the Harlan County Jr. Fair at the time of entry, the age of their birds and where they acquired the birds. For example: XYZ” BUSINESS, “XYZ” Hatchery, exotic bird auction, hatched at home or at a neighbor’s, etc. If birds are younger than 6 months of age OR purchased from an approved hatchery or business, they do not have to be tested at the county fair.
LIVESTOCK NEWS
COUNTY FAIR 4-H LIVESTOCK JUDGES:
Horse: Bruce Treffer, Lexington
Small Animal: Sue Nielsen, Minden
Sheep: Wade Hilker, Columbus
Dairy: Steve Wolf, Kearney
Beef: Aaron Cooper, Lincoln
Market Swine: Kelly Overmiller, Smith Center, Kansas
4-H LIVESTOCK REMINDERS
Commercial BREEDING sheep require a 4-H BREEDING sheep tag in their ear - NOT a 4-H market lamb tag.
All market swine coming to the Harlan County Fair must have an ear tag in their ear prior to arriving at the fair grounds.
All MARKET livestock exhibitors are asked to please tell the check in crew on Tuesday evening which animal(s) that you do NOT plan to sell in the auction. This could be your third sheep or pig that you could sell for the base bid or put into your family’s freezer (going to slaughter, but NOT in the sale), OR animal that you will be taking home, possibly going to Nebraska State Fair or AK-SAR-BEN.
The county fair board has decided that market animals that normally would sell, but are withdrawn from the sale and go home, may receive a premium for their animals at the auction. Please note that this excludes an exhibitor’s “third” pig or market sheep, and that this is premium ONLY (no base price). Four-H’ers must be present at the livestock auction to sell their animals.
COUNTY HORSE SHOW REGISTRATION
County horse show pre-registration forms have been sent out and need to be returned to the office no later than July 14.
ATTENTION: 4-H CLUB LEADERS!
The fair board would like to remind you that clean-up responsibilities for the fair grounds are the same as in years past. Please have your area cleaned up by July 23. If you have questions, contact Jerry Bose.
STALL RESERVATIONS DUE
Organizational leaders are reminded that stall reservations are due in the office no later than July 17. Letters are being mailed to each club. Any 4-H’er showing livestock and/or small animals is asked to please contact their leader BEFORE this date with the number of each species you will be bringing to fair.
MARKET ANIMAL EXHIBITORS
All MARKET beef, sheep and swine need to be weighed and checked in on Tuesday, July 25, between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Market swine and beef will be scanned as they are entered and weighed. Market lambs will be scanned beginning at 7:00 p.m. that evening.
AGAIN THIS YEAR . . . .
Small animals will be shown on entry day, beginning at 10:00. Cats will be shown first, followed by the rabbits and poultry. The judge will finish the small animal judging with the small pets.
