CHARLOTTE'S WEB - THE MOVIE
Charlotte’s Web will showing at the Alma and Oxford Theater the last week-end in January. To celebrate the 4-H theme of the movie, the Harlan County
4-H Council has decided to sponsor the Sunday, January 28, 4:30 p.m. matinee showing of the movie at the Parrot Theater in Alma. Movie goer’s will be able to see the movie for $2.00 and we are encouraging 4-H members, families and friends to attend this performance. There will be door prizes and special awards given. Those 4-H families who will be seeing Charlotte’s Web at the theater in Oxford are asked to call the office for a coupon that will allow them to save a dollar on admission to the show and enter their name in a door prize drawing.

4-H MARKET BEEF WEIGH-IN
Market beef weigh-in for Harlan County 4-H’ers will be held at the Harlan Feeders Feedlot on Saturday, January 27 from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. The animals will be ear tagged, weighed and if desired, nose printed, DNA sampled and implanted.
DNA SAMPLING
The following article was taken an Ak-Sar-Ben letter: As a reminder all market beef, lambs and hogs are all required to be DNA identified. (Market beef will still be required to be nose printed.) The cost to exhibitors will be $5.00 per head.” All fees must be paid to the county office at DNA collection time.

2007 4-H HORSE STAMPEDE
The 5th annual Stampede will include the state competitions for the 4-H Horse Bowl, Horse Public Speaking, Horse Demonstration and Art Contests. This year’s competitions will be held at the Animal Science Building on East Campus. Entry forms for all contests have may be found by clicking on 4-H Horse Stampede at http://animalscience.unl.edu/horse/STAMPEDE.htm All entries are due no later than February 1, 2007 for the March 10 event . . .
HORSE JUDGING CERTIFICATION
All current Nebraska 4-H horse judges MUST re-certify once every three years. there are two options to re-certify– either attend a judge’s seminar in person or by self study. For more information please go to: http://animalscience.unl.edu/horse/judges.htm.
NEBRASKA BEEF AMBASSADOR CONTEST
The 2007 date for this contest is April 7 at Kearney at the Farm Credit Building. There are three divisions – Age as of January 1: Pee-Wee (ages 8-11), Junior (ages 12-16), and Senior (ages 17-20).

COOKING 101
Cooking 101 - an after school beginning cooking school for fifth and sixth grade students is being planned for the month of February. The school will consist of three two-hour classes and a final cook off. Cooking 101 will be offered in Oxford, February 1,8,and 15 at the Methodist Church and in Alma February 6, 13, and 20 at the Johnson Center. The cost will be $15.00. Registration will be limited to eight at each site. Please contact the Office for class agenda and to register.
AFTER SCHOOL CRAFT WORKSHOPS
Two after school Valentine craft workshops are being planned. One will be held in Orleans at the Ag Center on January 22 from 3:15 -5:30 and another one will be held on January 23 in the courthouse meeting room in Alma at 3:30- 6:00. The workshops are for youth 2nd through 6th grade. The cost of the workshop will be $ 3.00. Please pre-register at the Office by January 19.
4-H QUILT QUEST TRAINING BEING OFFERED IN JANUARY
Adults interested in quilting or being a mentor, 4-H leaders, parents and youth wanting to learn more about the “Quilt Quest” project are invited to attend a free training workshop to be offered on Monday, January 29 by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension. The training will be held on January 29 in Lexington from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Dawson County Extension Office meeting room. The afternoon session will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Community Building in McCook. Please contact the office for a flyer.
4-H ROBOTICS
Exploring 4-H Robotics is a new project being introduced into the Nebraska 4-H Curriculum offerings. The robotics curriculum uses the LEGO Mindstorms product and is an ideal way to introduce science, math, engineering and technology skills while teaching life skills to youth ages 9-13. By using the activity guides and the Robotics and You CD, youth learn to build and program a robot to perform increasingly difficult tasks. Nebraska 4-H youth may rent a LEGO Mindstorm kit for $25 for an eight week period. The LEGO Mindstorm kit contains a laptop computer and a robotics kit with sensors everything you need to complete the 4-H project manuals. To reserve your kit or for questions regarding this new 4-H Project, contact the Extension Office. All LEGO Mindstorm kits will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

JANUARY JUBILEE PLANNED
January Jubilee will be held on January 15 at the Ag Center. The cost of the evening is $5.00 this covers the cost of a craft workshop and the soup supper. For those attending just the supper, the cost will be $3.00. Pre-registration is a must by January 12.

MOMEMAKER CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS
Again this year the Harlan County Homemaker Club Council will be awarding three $200.00 scholarships to Harlan County high school seniors. The scholarship applications will soon be sent to the local schools. Please encourage seniors to apply. Scholarship applications can also be picked up at the Harlan County Extension Office after January 19. Completed applications are due in the Extension office by Noon on March 2.
This year Harlan County seniors with grandmothers in Homemaker clubs will be considered for the special Homemaker club membership affiliated scholarships.
The Homemaker club member scholarship will be also awarded at the Scholarship Luncheon on March 12th . This $200.00 scholarship is open to any Homemaker club member wishing to further their education. Please contact the office if you would like an application or if you would like more information. These completed applications are also due in the office by Noon on March 2.

This year the book that the State is supposed to read is Crazy Horse by Marie Sandoz. Remember that special points are given on your club’s Honor Score Sheet if you read this book. You will be able to check this book out at your local library.
