A special thank you to all 4-H ‘ers, families and leaders who attended 4-H Family Fun Night on March 3. Fifteen Easter centerpieces were made and donated to the Senior Citizen Center in Oxford. You should be proud of your hard work.
HARLAN COUNTY 4-H SPEECH CONTEST
On March 17, nine 4-H’ers entered the Harlan County Speech Contest. Congratulations to each of them for doing such a great job! They truly are making the best better!
MAY 1 IS A VERY IMPORTANT DATE
All 4-H enrollment forms are due on May 1. Please have your enrollment sheet in by this date. It is important that we know who is going to be in what project so we can plan for this year’s fair and pre-fair events.
4-H DANCE
The 4-H dance and movie night will be held at the Ag Center in Orleans on April 11 from 7:30 - 10:30 p.m. Admission is only $2.00. Treats will be served and pop can be purchased. The dance is open to all 4-H’ers and their guests.
AREA LIVESTOCK JUDGING CLINIC
The Area Livestock Judging Clinic will be held on Monday, June 2, at the fairgrounds in Orleans. Ribbons will be awarded and trophies will be presented to the top junior and top senior overall judge. There will be individual placings only – no team awards. A tentative schedule is:

4-H SPONSORS NEEDED
Four-H sponsors are an important part of the Harlan County 4-H program. A big thank you goes to all of you who are sponsoring trophies and special awards.
This year we need one new trophy or special award sponsor. Please contact the Extension office if you want to support the 4-H program in this way.
PHOTOGRAPHY THEMES FOR 2008
Four-H photography themes are: Unit II – “Celebrating Citizenship” and Unit III – “Go For Gold” (In celebration of the Nebraska 4-H Foundation’s 50th Anniversary) All exhibit prints must portray Nebraska.
SHOOTING SPORTS LEADERS TRAINING
A 4-H Shooting Sport Leaders Training is scheduled for April 19 & 20 at the South Central 4-H Camp near Republican City. They need 12-18 youth that would be willing to spend a few hours getting "trained" in a shooting sports discipline. Youth are needed on Sunday, April 20 from 3:00 - 5:00 pm. The youth should be ages 8-16. If you are interested in learning how to shoot a bow, shotgun or BB gun and can attend, please call the Extension Office (928-2119) for more information.
LIVESTOCK CHANGES, REMINDERS, and NOTES FOR 2008
LAMB TAGGING
The state policy “says” that you may tag the lambs yourself before our tagging day, but the lambs must be seen by Tony or Lynette -WITH THE TAGS IN THEIR EARS - by June 15.
QUALITY ASSURANCE - 2008
All 4-H members taking any livestock projects must have quality assurance verification to show livestock. Lynette will be willing to offer the training to your club members at a club meeting and can do the testing at that time. Testing can also be done by appointment at the Extension office. A county wide training will be held on May 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the courthouse meeting room in Alma.
COUNTY 4-H LIVESTOCK QUIZ BOWL
The county quiz bowl contest will be held at the Ag Center in Orleans on May 28. Leaders, please pre-register your teams by May 20.

“NEW” BREEDING GILT SHOW
ID Sheets are enclosed to identify Breeding Gilts for the new show. Breeding Gilts must be identified with ear notches and a registration number if they are purebred by June 15. Individuals may exhibit a maximum of three breeding gilts at the show. More information including a complete listing of rules will be available online later this month.
PREMIER ANIMAL SCIENCE EVENTS
PASE will be held June 30 - July 1. Competition will include the State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest, 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl and other contests.
HELP FOR 4-H LEADERS
The 4-H Foundation has donated a bag of tricks to help 4-H leaders. The bag contains
“ Meeting in the Bag” learning ideas, Books of Games and Learning Activities. Leaders and parents are encouraged to check out the bag for use at a club meeting. Please plan to use this bag. It is doing no one any good just sitting in the office.
HANDBOOKS ARE AVAILABLE
Four-H handbooks for 2008 are available. Please stop in at the office to pick up your copy.
EXCITING SUMMER ACTIVITIES FOR 4-H’ERS
COUNTY CAMP IS BACK
This year Harlan County 4-H’ers ages 8-12 can all go to camp together on June 18-19-20 at the South Central 4-H Center. The cost of the camp is $100.00, but thanks to a $20.00 scholarship from Farm Bureau Women, the cost will be $80.00 per camper. Watch next month’s newsletter for the brochure.
OTHER CAMPS OFFERED
The 4-H Camp brochure that lists all the 4-H camps that are being offered in 2008 can be found at http://4h.unl.edu/. You are encouraged to choose a camp to attend. The Farm Bureau Women are offering a $20.00 scholarship per Harlan County 4-H’er to any of the camps.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS - CHILD CARE PROVIDERS IN-SERVICE
A three hour child care provider in-service is being planned for May 19 at the park in Alma (in case of bad weather it will held in the courthouse meeting room). The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a meal featuring safe picnic foods. Outdoor learning activities, crafts, games, and fun will be shared. HOMEMAKER CLUB NEWS
SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON
March 3 was the date of this year’s Homemaker Club Scholarship Luncheon. Winning this year’s high school scholarships were Hilke Brandon, Kalyn Poyser, and Chelsea Bills. Alternates were Jamie Scott and Jaclyn McAtee. Kristi Bose, A 1990 Homemaker Scholarship winner who teaches English at Southern Valley, was the guest speaker. A special thank you to the Homemaker Club members who furnished food for this annual event.
THIRD GRADE POSTER CONTEST
The Homemaker clubs sponsored a poster contest for the third graders in Alma, Orleans and Oxford. Forty-three students entered posters in this year’s contest.
APRIL 26 TOUR TO McCOOK
April 26 was the date chosen for the Homemaker Club tour to McCook . Please contact
the office if you would like to spend the day touring McCook. Final plans will be made as soon as we know how many are interested in going. An agenda will be sent to those wanting to attend. We will be car pooling ,so please tell us if you would be willing to drive. Those not driving will be charged $10.00 to help cover the cost of mileage.
